The wise men arrival and the stars

Disinformation

Depiction of Jesus birth, which was marked by sparkly stars in the night sky, indicated that Jesus was born in summer.

When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.  When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. (Matthew 2: 9-10)

The truth.

The wise men did not arrive at Bethlehem in night of Jesus birth, instead, they arrived in the range of 2 weeks to several months following Jesus birth.

Gospel provides hints regarding this.

  1. Matthew uses word “child” (παιδιον ‘paidion’), instead of “newborn” (βρέφος ‘brefos’) (Matthew 2: 11).

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child (παιδιον ‘paidion’) with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2: 11)

παιδιον ‘paidion’ ranged from post-newborn (approximately 2 weeks) to 2 years.

  2. Mary family had moved to house from stable cave.

And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. (Matthew 2: 11)

  3. Herod sought children at 2 year old and under (Matthew 2: 16)

Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. (Matthew 2: 16)

Orang Majus menuju Betlehem
The wise men arrived at Bethlehem not less than approximately 2 weeks following the birth of Jesus.

The verses shows that the wise men arrived at Bethlehem not less than 2 weeks following the birth of Jesus. Epiphany has been using possible fastest time, i.e, 2 weeks following Christmas.

The stars in the night sky were not indicative of summer season. Bethlehem winter with average temperature 7-16°C still allowed stars, because rain did not fall every night.

Conclusion

  1. The wise men arrived at Bethlehem not less than 2 weeks following the birth of Jesus.
  2. The stars were possibly visible in December, because rain did not fall every night.
