Because green leaves freshly cut off the tree symbolize welcoming King Jesus.

And many spread their garments in the way, and others cut down leaves off the trees and spread them in the way. (Mark 11: 8)

In the context of the nativity (Christmas), green leaves signifies welcoming birth of the King Jesus Christ.

Christmas in Bali, December 2013, was decorated with young coconut leaves. “Fresh green leaves” in Bali culture context was translated into fresh and young coconut leaves, a would-be green leaves.
